醫生的伎倆
書中沒有明說白色藥粉是什麼,但讀者可以推斷:醫生先餵下一種會引起嘔吐、腹痛的藥(外面套兩層膠囊讓藥效延遲),等孩子在他離開後發病,再回來用氨水「治好」,證明自己的醫術、坐實那筆帳單。奇諾的懷疑是對的。
眼睛「是藍的」
嬰兒的眼白(鞏膜)本來就常帶淡藍色,因為鞏膜較薄。醫生利用奇諾不懂醫學,把正常現象說成中毒症狀。
「被困住」的再現
上一節說「他不能拿確定的無知去對抗可能的知識」,這一節就具體示範了這個陷阱如何運作。

📖 導讀
這一節是全書最陰險的一場戲。醫生走進樹枝屋,胡安娜抱緊孩子,直到奇諾點頭才鬆手。醫生看了看已經消腫的傷口,然後翻開嬰兒的眼皮:「果然不出我所料。毒已經進到裡面了,很快就會發作。來,看——是藍的。」奇諾看到確實有一點藍,「可是他不知道它是不是本來就一直有點藍。陷阱已經設好了,他不能冒險。」
醫生從皮包裡拿出一小瓶白色藥粉,裝進一顆膠囊、外面再套一顆膠囊,捏開嬰兒的嘴,把膠囊放到舌根深處讓他吐不出來,再灌一口普逵酒。「我想毒會在一小時內發作……我一小時後再來。」奇諾把珍珠用破布包好,埋進屋角的泥土地裡。醫生回家,坐在椅子上看錶,吃著巧克力和甜點。
鄰居們在各自屋裡第一次談論珍珠,用拇指比著它有多大;「每個人都知道醫生為什麼來,他不擅長偽裝,大家都很了解他。」河口裡,一群小魚被大魚追殺,「屠殺持續著」;夜鼠在地上爬,夜鷹無聲地獵捕牠們。
一小時後,柯尤提托臉色潮紅、喉嚨抽動、流口水、肚子痙攣。奇諾說「原來醫生知道」——他一邊說,一邊想起那白色藥粉。醫生準時出現,把老婦人「像趕雞一樣」趕開,在水裡滴了三滴氨水灌下去:「幸好我懂蠍毒,否則——」孩子漸漸平靜睡著。「他會好的。我打贏了這一仗。」胡安娜崇拜地看著他。醫生關上皮包,「甚至很和善地」問:「你想什麼時候付這筆帳?」「等我賣了珍珠就付你。」
